The 5 acre botanic garden grew from an idea conceived in 1990 by two St. Albert citizens who shared a love of horticulture. Their vision was to create a garden in an area with a zone 3 plant hardiness rating where the results of various trees, shrub, perennial and vegetable trials could be carried-out and released to the general public.
Over the past 20 years, the St. Albert Botanic Park has become a jewel in the heart of St. Albert. Visitors range from busloads of schoolchildren, seniors, artists, and photographers to members of the general public. Many come to see the rose, lily and dahlia displays, which many consider are among the best in Alberta. Others come to purchase plants and mementos at the Park’s sales and gift shop.
The Park hosts a number of weddings and special community events. A Canada Day social, the little sprouts program, the annual rose show, Artists in the Park, the popular speaker series and even a fashion show are indicative of the diversity of the activities occurring at this increasingly popular community gathering point.
