Town of Redwater Town of Redwater

The Town of Redwater is a vibrant, welcoming community where everyone belongs.  Settled in 1907, the town was named after the Redwater River, which winds around the town and feeds into the nearby North Saskatchewan River.

Redwater was a farming area until the discovery of oil by Imperial Oil in 1948, which led to a boom in the economy and population.  Today, our town is home to 2,200 people and 150 businesses and the oil and gas industry continues to be a key part of our local economy.

Located in Sturgeon County, Redwater is only 30 minutes northeast of Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan and 5 km north of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.  Residents enjoy the advantages of a friendly, rural atmosphere while also having easy access to city services.

Redwater is proud to be a full service community that offers health care, emergency services, K-12 schools and various community groups and programs.  Our town boasts an abundance of recreation opportunities including a pristine 9-hole golf course, outdoor swimming pool, parks, playgrounds, running track, sports fields and dynamic community events.

Our state-of-the-art Provident Place multi-use facility hosts our indoor ice arena, curling club, golf club and a new Community Cultural Centre that features a 450-seat banquet facility complete with a full-service commercial kitchen, dance floor and stage.  It’s the perfect place to host any type of event!

Feeling adventurous?  The Redwater Sandhills Recreation Area is only 5 minutes away and features one of the largest sand dune fields in the region.   It’s an ideal destination for recreational vehicle day use, hiking and nature-watching.  After enjoying a day of fun in the great outdoors, spend the night at our campground or come unwind in one of our many local restaurants.

Our Museum hosts the Tourist Information Centre and is the hidden gem of Redwater.  Its large collection of pictures and artifacts takes you on a journey through our history and captures the story of “When Oil Hit Redwater”.  Be sure to also visit North America’s largest free-standing oil derrick, which still stands in the heart of town.
