Kicks-off Mother’s Day Weekend and continues through Father’s Day

This spring season, plan an escape route after being trapped indoors all winter. A Spring Drive will get you out to Edmonton's Countryside to explore the local region's greenhouses, farms, and gardens and will allow you to discover unique places for a family outing or adventure.

Check out these exciting Spring Drive venues to get you growing and to enjoy some family fun. 

Get Going & Grow!

After a long barren winter there is nothing like the warmth of the spring air, the sounds of birds chirping and the sight of new green leaves reaching out for the sun that makes us want to get out and enjoy the beauty of the new growing season. 

Plan a Mother's Day outing or just get out and enjoy the countryside with these five beautiful, garden-inspired Spring Drive destinations:

Just minutes from Sherwood Park with outdoor display gardens featuring thousands of hardy perennials, shrubs, trees and evergreens, The Greenland Garden Centre will provide you with inspiring combinations for your own landscape.  Stroll throughout the paths in the large pond garden, or in and around the various display beds of roses and perennials. With an amazing indoor garden, outdoor botanical garden, an award winning selection of giftware, a spacious playground for the youngsters and a garden cafe. This is a destination where you can really take some time to stop and smell the roses!

Next stop head to the refreshing yet relaxing Aqualine Aquatic Plants & Water Features with expert hosts, Hugh and Jeannie Sufferin. Visit the aquatic greenhouse and beautiful water ponds, waterfalls, and fountains in a natural setting. Consult with the Sufferin family who specialize in the design and creation of unique, quality constructed water features and the plants that will flourish in them.

If you are heading in a northerly direction, Country Clay & Garden Works located in Sturgeon County, near the Town of Redwater and is the home of Loretta McDermott; expert gardener extraordinaire. Looking for gardening advice or inspiration? This is the place to get your green thumb even greener.

Also north, near the Town of Bon Accord you can visit Erdmann’s Gardens & Greenhouses which overlooks the meandering Redwater River and is a peaceful way to spend a day browsing lush plants and fresh vegetables.

Just west of Edmonton. you will find Parkland County and the Devonian Botanic Garden. There is no better way to enjoy a sunny day than to spend time in the stunning 190 acre property made up of manicured gardens, mixed woodland vegetation and extensive nature trails. Highlights of the Garden include the beautiful Kurimoto Japanese Garden, the butterfly and cactus showhouses, ornamental flower gardens, alpine gardens, herb, sensory and healing gardens.

Add Greystone Gardens Bed & Breakfast to your itinerary. Located just outside of Devon, in Parkland County, you will find a quiet country retreat where visitors can stroll through beautiful gardens, stop and rest by a pond, look for beavers in the creek, listen to birds sing, and enjoy country living at its best. Don't miss the spectacular garden railway in one of the feature gardens.

Family Fun Activities

Looking for something unique to do with Mom on Mother's Day or Dad on Father's Day or ways to spend some quality family time? Here are some great family adventures that are sure to please kids and adults of all ages:

Out west, in Parkland County, the Rural Rendezvous Unique Country Experience is for anyone who wants to revel in the real country experience. From Beyond the Blue Sky, an authentic cowboy store, to rooting through an incredible array of collectables at Ever After Antiques; to four fine garden-inspired destinations including Granola Garden Centre, Sunrise and Forget-Me-Not Greenhouses and George Pegg Botanic Garden, to farms with four-legged friends who just can’t wait to meet you. In all there are 12 places to visit! Don't miss the Rendezvous with Mom on May 7 & 8.

Gentlemen, ladies, and kids of all ages…start your engines and head south to Castrol Raceway in Leduc County! Join thousands of other racing enthusiasts at this exciting destination. Whether it is motocross sports, top-fuel dragsters, jet cars or good old street drags, this is the place to be. Choose from regular weekly events to special events happening throughout the spring and into the summer. There are great concessions, the Rotary Playground for the kids, and lots of action all day long.

Also in Leduc County, don't miss the Leduc #1 Energy Discovery Centre which salutes the grit, determination and success of the Alberta oil patch. See indoor exhibits which will take you into the world of energy, where you can examine fossils and rocks and see earth formations as you virtually journey down 1,700 meters on the world's largest drill bit. Outside you can step onto the floor of a 1940's drilling rig to touch a part of Alberta's rich petroleum heritage. Do a self-guided tour of the gallery and outdoor exhibits or have a guide walk with you to explain all the mysteries of discovery, production and transportation.
